Utah’s workforce has a rare and unique skill set that no other state in the country can boast.  The state of Utah has an unmatched number of bilingual residents of all ages.  Utah’s Governor Jon Huntsman is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, the only governor in the U.S. with such a skill.  Many businesses in Utah utilize this unique quality and implement workers’ bilingual abilities to further their business capabilities and relationships with global clients.

 Diverse Language Capabilities

Brigham Young University (BYU), located in Provo, Utah, creates a huge impact on Utah residents’ foreign language skill set.

• Of BYU's 30,000 students, 77 percent speak a second language and 47 percent have lived outside the U.S. for at least one year.
• Over 170 languages are spoken by BYU students, according to a 2004 campus survey.
• The current student body reports 31 percent enrolled in one of the 46 language courses offered and 85 percent of seniors reported the ability to speak a second language.
• More than four percent of BYU’s student body are foreign exchange students studying in Utah, representing over 115 different countries.

American Fork High School

AFHS is one of eight high schools in the Alpine School District.

Accreditation: Northwest Association of Schools & Colleges, continuous since 1940's.

• College bound—Approximately 70 percent of graduates enter institutes of higher learning.  In 2006, the ACT average mean composite score was 22.9.

• Scholarships—Approximately 24 percent of the graduating class received scholarship consideration.

• Advanced Placement (AP) program—Twenty different programs are offered to qualified students: Art History, Art Studio, Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Language, Environmental Science, French, German, Gov/Politics, Latin, Music, Physics C, Psychology, Science, Spanish, Statistics and US History.  In 2006-2007, 296 students passed their AP tests with a score of 3 or higher (a 64 percent passage rate.)

• Recognition—For the last five years, AFHS has been either first or second in Alpine School district in the number of National Merit Semi Finalists and in the number of students enrolled in AP classes for 2007-2008, with 579 out of 1730 students enrolled.  The high school has been awarded local, state and national awards in Art, Business, English, Science, Drama, Band, Debate, Athletics and Vocational Education.

• Vocational Programs—Instruction is given in seven applied technology areas and students may be placed on a job where they would be released from school, for one or two periods, to work and receive credit.  Concurrent credit may be earned in many of these areas at Utah Valley University.  Internships are also available.
