Outdoor Activities
Welcome to Utah, paradise for outdoor enthusiasts! From national parks to ski resorts and golf courses, Utah will surprise you with its variety. Whether you come to ski or snowboard in “the Greatest Snow on Earth”, to mountain bike, to take a summer trip whitewater rafting, to splash down American Fork Canyon, or to jet ski on Utah Lake, American Fork's central location means adventure is calling during every season of the year.
In the summer, recreational and camping opportunities abound, from the American Fork Boat Harbor at Utah Lake to the Timpanogos Cave National Monument and the Alpine Scenic Loop, located in beautiful American Fork Canyon. The city lies within a half day’s drive of Utah’s spectacular national parks, monuments and recreation areas. In 2006, American Fork built a state-of-the-art skate park.
American Fork is also only minutes away from numerous ski resorts, including Sundance with its annual summer film festival. Experience Sundance Resort’s intimate, rustic atmosphere, graced by 5,000 acres of protected wilderness amidst the beauty of spectacular Mt. Timpanogos.
Library
American Fork’s library houses a community room for public use, including town meetings, recitals and seminars. Within the library there are spacious study rooms, Internet labs and a substantial collection of children’s books including Spanish offerings. The library boasts holdings totaling 104,107 and a circulation of 296,928. It also enriches the community with programs such as the Princess Ball, the Harry Potter Birthday Party, an annual Scary Story Contest and family movie nights based on popular children’s books. For school-aged children there is an active summer reading program, accompanied by preschool and toddler programs during the school year. An inviting children's section with weekly story time activities fosters and encourages imagination. The reading catalog and check-out services were automated in 2007. Patrons may now access account and collection data via the Internet.
Community Events
For a true celebration, come to American Fork during Steel Days. Parades, cooking contests, dances and golf tournaments are just some of the events held during the celebration each summer. The Big Show headliners have included national and local artists, such as Diamond Rio and America. The concert is followed by a spectacular fireworks display.
Arts Council
The American Fork Arts Council seeks to educate, enrich and inspire by providing leadership and encouragement for artistic and cultural excellence, which enhances the quality of life for the people of American Fork and neighboring communities.
American Fork City, through its Arts Council, sponsors a unique and active program for community involvement in the arts. Residents may audition to play in the American Fork Symphony or the Wasatch Winds Community Band. They may sing in the Timpanogos Chorale or act in the annual Community Theater production. Photographers and visual artists may showcase their art work in the Steel Days Art Show each July.
Youth programs include the annual Arbor Day essay contest, the annual Mary Kawakami Speech Competition (which supports the Veterans Day Memorial Program), the youth theater program and the American Fork Children's Choir. Youth are also invited to showcase their artwork in the Steel Days art show and in the Christmas art show. The American Fork High School marching band is renowned throughout the nation and has performed at the New York Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and in a United States presidential inauguration.
At the American Fork Amphitheater every Monday night, June through August, there are enjoyable Concerts in the Park, which are free to the public. Featured are the American Fork Symphony, the Wasatch Winds, the Timpanogos Chorale, the Crescent Super Band (from The Music School, recently named best high school jazz band in the world by Down Beat Magazine), and many local and regional pop, folk and jazz artists.
Parks
American Fork boasts 27 recreational parks. More than 20 new playgrounds were built in 2004. Art Dye ball park hosts baseball games and provides a beautiful scenic panorama of the Wasatch mountains.
